this weekend was a great one for fibre enthusiasts as the first Knit East Event was held
at the Algonquin Hotel. Organized by Cricket Cove gourmet yarn Shops with locations
in Blacks Harbour, Saint John and Moncton, NB.
over 150 eager participants had signed up already before the event to learn from high
carat designers such as Cat Bordhi, JaneThornley, Lucy Neatby,Veronik Avery and teacher/blogger Yarn Harlot-Stephanie Pearl-McPhee

everyone had a great time, and we hope next year will even be bigger!!

Visting Lavenhop organic grower

With summer starting through full tilt, our chefs took the opportunity
to visit our organic growers' farm. Lavenhop, supplying Europa Inn now for
the second season, invited us to visit the fields and getting hands-on
by picking their organic garlic scapes. the picking is crucial in order to harvest big garlic bulbs in the fall.
the Scapes are delicate early summer veg, make a fantastic pesto and taste great as a sautee.

So, here we set off at 7am with a 3 chefs and me (Simone, the picture-taker ;-)
and our 3 kids (yep, good that our car seats 8 people).
We all had a super time meeting Jackie and Bill and their great operation!
they grow this year 30!! different varieties of vegetables and herbs, from Lavender,
Greens, Beans, Peas, Potatoes and more.
Last year their Hop and Lavender was used in one of Ale House Brewery's specialty Beer creations:
'Lavenhop' they called it!
Markus is now all ready to finish our garden in the back where we grow most
of the herbs used Europa Restaurant along with some vegtables. the space is not big
enough to grow everything- that's why we are so happy to team up with Lavenhop!

Atlanticade Motorbike Festival

yes, it has been a long haul for us here, but yey!- I'm so happy to announce the our new lobby area and the Spa are all completed!

For the Lobby area we wanted to restore and feature the original 1790's timber structure and old stone foundation which was a pain staking endeavour, but well worth the effort as we have taken great pride during our recent renovations to save not only the history of St. Andrews' 'AndraeLeo hall' but also the story told by the numbered beams, glass bottles left in the walls and everyday 'trinkets' such as cigarette boxes and Opera tickets.

For the Spa

we are thrilled with the tranquil and euro-inspired style, the LEED eco bamboo flooring and the understated elegance of this multifunctional space- all in time for Atlanticade and the summer season.

Europa Spa will be open by appointment offering pampering treatments for hand, feet and face along with relaxing massage, reiki or indian head massage- please reserve with Bonnie at

529-8551, or you can book your accommodation/spa- package directly with us.

In addition to the Spa, our carpenters have been busy all winter and spring to upgrade the inn's bathrooms for an 'all-tile', european look featuring soaker tubs (some with air jets) for the ones that like to unwind with a relaxing bath during their stay with us or glass showers and low tubs for the ones that prefer easy step-in.

Our guest rooms have all new bedding, coverings and window treatments and i'm thrilled to

introduce my original seaside paintings in the guestrooms and hallway to complete your Bay of Fundy getaway experience.

Seafood festival St. Andrews May 31- June 5th, 2011

For it's second year, the Charlotte Coastal Region Tourism Association is hosting

a seafood festival in beautiful St. Andrews by-the-Sea.

It involves Restaurants, Fishermen, Salmon Growers and Suppliers to the industry and Hotels/Inns to showcase what the Canadian Maritimes have to offer.

This year, the event is basically divided into two main parts:

May 31st-June 2nd is a trade show/convention geared towards Aquaculture Professionals

formerly knows as the 'Aquaculture Fair' or 'Aqua Fair'

and

June 3rd-5th is a festival for the public featuring yummy (sea)foods, dinner extravaganzas, buy-of-the-boat lobster, farmers market and music throughout town.

Cooking during Festival time last year! always fun!

Europa Inn will be featuring a fish and seafood related menu with daily creations, tapas for eat-in and take out and cooking demos.

Looking out the window, i see snow flying, but my heart is already filling with sunny memories of summer and on how wonderful St. Andrews is to be discovered- and it doesn't even have to cost one cent!

after a busy valentines weekend, we'll need to take a break to get going with our reno of the new hotel rooms and wellness area and indoor pool.
reopening: march 19th 2010!
me, Simone is busy designing the pool area and the guys did pour the first batch of concrete which will be the chaning rooms- all infloor heating and waste water pipes were in place.
now its off to finish digging the pool, get the entrance moved and the infloor heating installed for the pool and the concrete poured.
here i'm posting my first take on the artwork for the pool area- a smaller version.

Chefs for Unicef

it has become already a tradition for Markus Ritter to represent Europa Inn at the annual
fundraising dinner 'Chefs for Unicef' hosted at the Fairmont Algonquin Hotel in St. Andrews, NB.
this year it was again a plated dinner- 7 courses stong, featuring delicious dishes created by 7 renown restaurants and culinary colleges from Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton and St. Andrews.

Markus worked on two dishes this year, representing Europa Inn with a spiced pumpkin sorbet on
florentine chip

and as the culinary instructor of the Community College St. Andrews him and his culinary students plated the vegetarian course:
Panko encrusted eggplant, spaetzle cake, trio of exotic mushrooms, red & yellow pepper emulsion and parsley oil.for the upcoming Valentines weekend, we'll be open friday, satuday and sunday 5-9pm- so if you have a valentine, treat him/her to dine at Europa Restaurant!

on the renovation end of things: the guys are still digging and chopping out the pool with jack hammers, hopefully mid week we can pour the first concrete. see Markus 'spare time' activities;-)

Simone Ritter
Simone Ritter is an artist in her own right, and her talents are reflected throughout the Europa Inn and Restaurant.

Watercolours by Simone adorn many of the walls. Colourful without boldness, they are relaxing to view. Some depict foods, while others are sea and landscapes.

During the busy summer season, it is difficult to pursue her other interestes of walking, bicycle riding and swimming. This is offset by her love of being with people and greeting her guests. Her bubbly personality, friendly mien and charming nature are well suited to her role of hostess.

Annual Festival of Art
Every year Simone invites her artistic friends to bring their works to Europa Retaurant & Inn for a two-day show and sale during the first weekend in December with the Ross Museum open house.

The Town of St. Andrews is located in the southwest corner of New Brunswick on scenic Passamaquoddy Bay. Markus Ritter and his wife Simone moved to St. Andrews, New Brunswick from Bavaria. Together, they invite you to embark on a culinary journey as you savour a delicious menu featuring fresh, local seafood, meats and organic local vegetables. After you sample a bounty of National, International and European specialties, enjoy delectable European desserts including ice cream and sorbet prepared in the kitchen nightly. In addition to his regular plates, Chef Ritter will accommodate any special dietary needs so be sure to mention any food allergies upon ordering.

At Europa, presentation is key and every care is taken to provide you with a pleasant dining experience. From the fresh flowers and flatware which is polished to a brilliant shine, to sparkling glasses and linens which are carefully pressed and neatly folded, no detail is overlooked. All of this adds to the wonderful dining ambience at L'Europe.

Chef Ritter
Trained in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, Master Chef Markus Ritter has been in the business of food since 1984 and a master chef since 1998.

After a two and a half year apprenticeship under master chef Klaus Stadler in Germany, Ritter worked at the Hotel Schachener Hof in Lindau. He then went to Gstaad, Switzerland where he was chef at Le Grand Chalet. Next, Ritter traveled aboard the Royal Viking Sea cruise ship, where he prepared wonderful dishes as the ship sailed to USA, Canada, Australia, Asia and New Zealand. The IFA Hotel in Wildental, Austria was Ritter's next stop where he worked two years at the Marriott Hotel in Munich where he was Chef Garde Manger and made buffets and banquets for up to 450 people. He then earned his Masters certificate in cooking in 1998, at Baden-Baden, Germany. After managing at Max & Moritz, Ritter became Sous Chef atWeinstube Gierer in Wasserburg, Germany where he was featured on the German television show, Fahr'mal Hin. It was here, at Weinstube Gierer, that Ritter met his wife Simone. Today, Ritter combines all his experience and knowledge to create a dining experience you will not soon forget.

Europa
Many are intrigued by the history of the L'Europe building. It began as a small family house which later became the foundation for the St. Andrews Catholic church. Years later, the church was moved and the town's legion purchased the property and turned it into a hall which held crowds of up to four hundred. In the 1950s, locals remember the building as a movie theatre and dance hall. In 1983, Anita Ludwig (a German Chef) purchased the property and turned it into a restaurant. The Ritters took ownership of L'Europe in the year 2000.
